How does aromatherapy work? Here’s what recent studies are showing. The brain registers aroma twice as fast as it does pain. This is why the inhalation of aromas can so powerfully transform ones emotions. Smell is the only sense that bypasses the blood-barrier to the central nervous system. Through the olfactory system, essential oil molecules go directly to the limbic area of the brain, the center of emotions and memory, to give it immediate information.

Knowing this, researchers have studied the effects on brain wave patterns when essential oils are smelled or rubbed into the skin. They found that oils such as orange, jasmine, and rose alter the brain waves into a rhythm that produces calmness. Stimulating oils such as basil, black pepper, rosemary, and cardamom work by producing a heightened energy response.

Today we, as aromatherapists, are skilled in the art of combining essential oils to treat conditions such as insomnia, headaches, colds, depression, digestive disorders, pain, anxiety, adolescent agitation, menstrual cramps, infection… the list goes on. As our work grows, we are beginning to work in hospitals, hospices, and natural healthcare centers everywhere.

We invite you to join our family of aromatherapists, as we gently and aromatically do our part to help balance and heal the world.
